How to take care of roller shutters

Durable Roller shutters play a very key role in ensuring your house is safe from any form of security threat and bad weather conditions. If you want the window roller shutters to effectively fulfil their purpose and also last as long as possible, it is important that you learn how to take care of them. Besides durability and performance, good care also reduces maintenance costs that one would incur in case the shutters experience failure due to inappropriate handling.

In this article, I am going to share with you how you should clean, maintain and take care of your windows roller shutters in order to get the best out of them.

  1. Grease the shutter bearings once or twice a year

The bearings of the rollers are among the most delicate parts that will likely fail if you don’t take good care of them. One of the ways to ensure the rollers of your shutters last longer is through greasing their bearings at least once a year. Greasing reduces wear and tear that in the end improves durability of the bearings. Beside durability, greasing will also make it easier to open and close the shutters due to the reduced friction within the bearings of the roller.

So, ensure you grease the bearings at least once every year. In case, the window roller shutter produces noise from the rollers while opening or closing it, it could also be a sign that the grease you applied is used up and more greasing is needed. In such situations, you don’t have to wait for time you had planned to do the greasing. Just do it immediately

Avoid using very sticky lubricants

Sticky lubricants attract a lot of dust and dirt that could affect the performance and durability of the shutter guides (rollers). Avoid using silicon-based lubricants because most of them are sticky and will likely cause the problem discussed above. Lubricant sprays that are anti-static are the best option since they ensure a proper friction balance. They also do not attract dust and dirt like the sticky lubricants.

Keep the roller shutters clean

Regularly clean the shutters and also make sure there are no substances stuck around the shutter especially in the rack. One of the most neglected part of the shutter is the upper sections (rack) where the shutter roles over. Remember the rack of the shutter is where the shutter guides, sensors and motors (for automated shutters) are located. These are the most vulnerable parts of the shutter. So make sure the rack is kept clean to prevent the dirt from getting into any of the above parts

Regularly service the motors for automated window roller shutters

Automated roller shutters whose opening and closing is aided by motors often need more maintenance than the manual ones. One of the critical parts that needs frequent attention are its motors. Make sure the motors are regularly serviced to avoid any chances of failure. These motors should also not be making any form of vibration when the shutter is opening or closing. If there is any form of vibration, the motor is most likely having issues that need the attention of a technician

Open and close the shutters gently

If your window roller shutters are manual, you don’t need to use a lot of force to open and close them. Appling a lot of force could affect the shutter hinges and the rollers which in the long run may lead to early failure. Please note that a roller shutter that has no issues with the rollers or hinges will always be easy to open and close. If you realize you need more force to open the roller shutter, then chances are it needs lubrication to ease movement of the rollers.

Paint the roller shutters if necessary

Shutters that are made out of normal steel or wood will often need painting to safe guard them from being affected by rain. Painting also safe guards wooden shutters from being attacked by insects. There is no specific amount of time you should take before painting. It should all depend on the current state of the shutters. That’s why the need for painting might be more for people in rainy areas compared to those in dry areas.

Use the roller shutters regularly to maintain good working conditions

If you don’t open and close the shutters for a long time, they may stop functioning very well. Just like a car or any other machine, shutters were designed to be used regularly. Abandoning them for a couple of weeks or months may affect their functioning. So, make sure you open and close them at least once a week.

Regularly replace batteries for the roller shutter remote

If you have automated/electrical roller shutters, make sure the batteries in the remote are always working well. Dead batteries will affect the signal transmission between the roller shutters sensors and your remote which could affect opening and closing of the shutters. At times people forget, and in a situation where the shutters are not properly opening and closing, they think it is the shutter with a problem, yet the problem is dead batteries.

Conclusion

Every equipment or accessory that has a mechanical system always wears out with time. This is not different with window roller shutters. The rollers that enable these collapsible shutters to roll over are the most delicate part on these shutters. For your roller shutter to last some good years before failing, you will have to give frequent attention to the rollers. Always ensure they are greased on time using the right lubricants

In maintenance, cleanliness is one of the things that you shouldn’t compromise. Make sure the shutters are cleaned regularly especially the rack where the shutters roll over when being opened and closed. If all the above measures are properly followed, your window roller shutters will last you years before experiencing any form of failure. This will save you money and the inconvenience that would be brought about by their failure
